Think Tank Photo introduces the Sling-O-Matic, the photo industry’s first sling camera bag that can be easily switched to either shoulder. The Sling-O-Matic’s adjustable, fully padded shoulder strap “automatically” slides along a set of rails to change which shoulder the bag can be worn on. This is the innovative solution to the problem inherent with other sling bags: only being designed to wear the sling bag over the same shoulder. With one smooth motion, the Sling-O-Matic can be quickly switched to the opposite shoulder without losing the characteristics that have made sling bags popular among photographers. The Sling-O-Matic series offers three unique bags to choose from, depending on the set of photo gear a photographer needs to carry.

Key Features:
  • Easily switches back and forth to carry over either shoulder
  • Gear access stays on top when Sling-O-Matic is in front
  • Fits a DSLR and a 70-200mm f/2.8 attached, with the lens hood in position
Gear Profile:
Fits a regular DSLR and a 70-200mm f/2.8 attached with lens hood in position, or 2-3 additional lenses plus a flash
Technical Specifications:
  • Interior Dimensions: 8.25” W x 15.5” H x 5.5” D* (21 x 39 x 14 cm*)
  • Exterior Dimensions: 9” W x 16.5” H x 6” D (23 x 42 x 15 cm)
  • Weight: 2.3–3.1 lbs (1.0–1.4 kg)

Exterior: For superior water-resistance, all exterior fabric has a durable water-repellant (DWR) coating, plus underside of the fabric has a polyurethane coating. It also has 1680D ballistic nylon, 420D velocity nylon, YKK® RC Fuse (abrasion resistant) zippers, antique nickel-plated metal hardware, nylon webbing, and 3-ply bonded nylon thread.

Interior: 210D silver-toned nylon, high-density extruded nylon, removable 210D silver-toned nylon & velex dividers, polyurethane backed velex liner, clear polyurethane mesh pocket (non-PVC), 2x polyurethane coated nylon 210T seam-sealed taffeta rain cover, high-density open & closed cell foam, and 3-ply bonded nylon thread.

1 The photo industry's first sling bag that can be easily switched back and forth to either shoulder.  Sling-O-Matic's adjustable, fully padded shoulder strap "automatically" slides along a set of rails to change which shoulder the bag can be worn on.  With one smooth motion, the Sling-O-Matic can be quickly switched to the opposite shoulder without losing the characteristics that have made sling bags popular among photographers.
2 Gear access always stays on top, when the Sling-O-Matic is in front, no matter which shoulder the bag is carried over.  Part of the challenge of creating a "reversible" sling bag is to make sure that the access door to the photo equipment faces up when the bag swings forward.  No complex reconfiguration of the Sling-O-Matic is required.  Simply flip the bag over, open it up and start taking great photos!
gear spill Nikon 24 - 70 f/2.8, Nikon D700 mounted to a 105 f/2.8 Macro and a Nikon 14 - 24 f/2.8.
3 Fits a regular size DSLR with up to a 70 - 200 f/2.8 attached and the lens hood in shooting position with additional room for a flash or other slim accessories.
4 Discreetly stylized to avoid obviously appearing like a camera bag.  Going incognito is important when carrying expensive photo equipment.  Like other Think Tank bags, the Sling-O-Matic is all black on the outside so it won't attract too much attention when the equipment is stowed away.
6 Up to a medium sized tripod can be carried on one side using the included tripod straps.  Each Sling-O-Matic includes two fully adjustable straps that attach to small, but secure, fabric loops on either side of the long pocket.  Depending on the size of the tripod legs, one or two of the legs can be inserted into the long pocket for additional stability.
7 Some small tripods can simply be carried in the long pocket, without using the tripod straps.
5 Long side pocket for carrying a large water bottle or other bulky accessories.
8 Large handles on three sides help to swing the bag around or just carry it in hand.
9 Wide zippered pockets on front, back, and side for carrying a newspaper, airline boarding passes, or other items.
10 Business card pocket on the top for carrying a short stack of business cards.
11 Attach the included "chest strap" for additional stability while walking around.
12 The adjustable side of the chest strap can be used as a waist strap, if preferred.
13 A small pocket on the bottom of the Sling-O-Matic is available for storing any of the removable straps.
14 A selection of padded dividers are included to partition the Sling-O-Matic's interior for different types of gear.
15 A seam-sealed rain cover is included for protecting the Sling-O-Matic and its contents from heavy rain, dust or snow.

I bought this bag for a trip to Europe. For me, small is everything, always has been, but I cannot afford to leave needed gear behind. The Sling-O-Matic 10 fit the bill for me, I am impressed! Here is what I got into and onto the bag. Business Cards. My Canon Xsi with 50mm 1.2 and hood, Canon 24-105 zoom with hood, Canon 70-300 zoom, Sigma 12-24EX, Canon430EX II flash, Sanyo Xacti video camera, 2 lens converters, 3 battery chargers w/extra batteries and the various small accessories that I carry. Then I strapped my Monfroto carbon fiber tripod in its bag to the side of the side of the Sling-O-Matic. All of this weights in at a mere 19lbs, is a joy to carry and will fit nicely into the overhead on my flight. And I still have room for a couple of magazines or newspaper. Nice job on this bag!

The biggest small shoulder bag I have, its swallowed a Canon 550D with battery pack all attached to a Sigma 150-500mm. Well made, quality bag

I'm amazed at how much stuff this little bag can hold and it's extremely well made too!!

It even fits Nikon D3. Tough, versatile and just the right size. What's not to like! Great job. Here it is in action -

My current favorite urban bag. It carries my Canon 5D with lens, flash, and two other short-medium range lenses, as well as my Gitzo GT1550t tripod and an assortment of small accessories like CF cards, etc. I love the ability to easily change lens by rotating the bag to the front. In this position, the bag serves as a work platform that holds lens hoods, end caps, etc., which is a tremendous benefit.

I got the Sling-o-matic 10 on the test drive. My thought in choosing the 10 was that it would be Percy to carry extra lens, body, flash with me during busy wedding shoots. Have all the essentials without me without too much extra. I was so impressed with it that I decided to keep it within 24 hours. My basic comments: - well made. Nice and rigid. Holds its shape well. Stands upright on it own when fully loaded. - comfortable to wear. Most comfortable camera backpack I've ever carried, sling or conventional. - swallows standard sized bodies. Improvements: Only thought is that the sling o matic 20 is probably too big for what I want, and the 10 could be a touch larger. Increasing from 8.5 inches deep to 9 inches deep would allow it hold lenses like a 70-200 straight up without a great increase in size. Would also allow it hold a standard size body with 24-70 f/2.8 attached. Right now it can't. Please consider this model a tad deeper for the V2 version. You should fit check all you bags with a D700 type camera and the Nikon 24-70 attached.

Bag of Tricks: I’m on my forth ThinkTank product and just recently received the ‘Sling O Matic 10’ under the test-drive program. I was skeptical with this design but after stuffing my A900 and 135/1,8 with a slew of other stuff, I was impressed. It not only accommodated my gear with room to spare, it’s the most ergonomic bag I have ever used. Pros: • Handles very well in practice and doesn’t become unruly when walking, bending or accessing your gear. • The shoulder strap is heavily padded and very comfortable. The bottom handle is perfect for pivoting the bag to your front for quick access of your camera. • The zippers are high quality and open and close smoothly with minimal binding. • The see through interior zippered pocket is very practical. • The accessory pack includes a slew of extra straps and dividers for just about any configuration you can reasonably imagine. This helps to digest the cost of the bag in relative terms. • There is a nice Tripod/Monopod pocket along the backside of the bag although I don’t have a pod small enough for this form factor. However, the RRS-14 or similar would fit very well to this configuration. Nitpicks: • I wish the structure of the bag were just a tiny bit firmer so as to retain its form with heavier gear but I suppose that would add more weight. • The changing of the sling for left/right carry does take some practice but that’s a subjective thing’ based on your own acuity. • As usual in my reviews I wish the bag was offered in other colors besides in the classic ‘boring black’ but I guess that’s a standard that ThinkTank doesn’t want to challenge. The ‘Sling O Matic 10’ in conjunction with my Digital Holster 20 v2.0 allows me to be prepared for most outings. I don’t yet have a need for anything larger but ThinkTank offerings are among the top contenders.

New things too learn with Sling O Matic 10. They all looked hard to do at first, but very soon became easy. Putting on/taking off, adjusting the fit (really great, thanks), changing shoulders, adding waist/side straps, everything always comes out right side up, changing lenses inside/on the bag, see through inside pocket(great, thanks), what do I do with all those dividers, the tripod pocket really does hold my travel angle. This bag is not meant just to pack and transport; it really is designed too work out of. Is there any room for improvement? Not much, but for me I am now using the long side pocket for 2 water bottles, so could you make across the bottom strap holders for my tripod? This bag is a keeper.

If you want a sling bag, then this is it. I got this one under the test drive program and the design and build are excellent. Sadly it made me realize I prefer a backpack or shoulder bag, but for anyone who likes sling bags this is it. Could fit a good deal in the 10, probably gets a bit heavy with the larger models.

So, I finally decided I NEEDED something different--I had been operating with both a backpack and a side bag. My backpack was just SO hot, in the summer, on my back (not to mention difficult to change lenses with) and my side bag was big and clunky. I chose this bag in order to streamline a bit. It was a GREAT choice! I am a freelance photographer so my jobs vary. Events, and hiking with my camera, are the two things I needed a good bag most for, though. As I loaded up for my first event shoot, I was SHOCKED at how much I could fit in there! I was able to take three lenses, an external flash and my camera, with a battery pack attached. I was also able to slip a notebook and pens in there, as well as my business cards. Plus, the rain gear the bag came with was able to stay in there too. (Parking isn't always close and it was snowing when I left--you never know!) It was wonderful, at the event, to carry all of my things easily--AND to be able to switch lenses without having to completely remove, and find a spot to lay down, a backpack. (Just slide the bag from back to side and switch!) The ability to slide it from my side to my back was SO nice--especially as I was weaving my way through a crowded room. (No clunky side bag crashing into people!) I was on my feet for two hours and it stayed comfortable the entire time. Hiking is the other thing I LOVE this bag for. I have room for my lenses, the water proof bag cover it came with it, bug spray, my external flash and tripod. (There are straps to attach your tripod to.) I switch lenses based on what I'm shooting, so, like with the event, this bag made that incredibly simple! PLUS, while hiking, there are many times that I need to shift my bag due to tree branches, a tight fit, balance and/or comfort. This bag makes that so quick and easy--no more taking off my backpack when I'm crouching under a fallen tree! I have NO idea why I didn't make a switch to this bag years ago--though I am SO glad I finally did! I can't even imagine going back now!

Biggest little bag you can find. Totally comfortable and very clever design. I have a Nikon D800E, 28-70 F2.8, 14-24 F2.8, micro 105 and the 50mm F1.4 all fit perfectly-zipper is a little tight with the 14-24 mounted, but it works. My camera is usually out anyway, and it is super convenient for changing lenses. Spare pockets for CF cards, batts, etc. Could not be happier with product, design and quality!

Bought one of these from Hunt's Photo on the recommendation of one of their staff. Seemed comfy empty, but once I put some gear in it the problems started. The strap goes from wide to narrow too soon for my liking. It dug into my flesh and made me look like I was wearing a push up bra (I'm a man) When I transitioned from over the shoulder to in front for access, the harsh nylon strap cut across my neck causing pain. If you are of a thin athletic build and wear thick, collared shirts, this might be the bag for you! I would recommend trying any equipment before buying, however.

Love this bag. I have my Nikon D7000 w/18-300mm attached along with my 85mm portrait lens, filters, charger, cords, other junk and a tripod attached on the side. I take this thing everywhere I go. This is a well thought out product and I feel that my gear is safe when in it. Thanks Guys.

This is my first Thinktank bag and my first "sling" bag. I've alway been keen on backpacks and shoulder bags my whole life for my camera gear. This time I wanted something different, and it is very different, in a very good way. It does hold an amazing amount of gear, but it can get heavy at the end of a long days shoot. Unlike other slings though, you can switch sides on your shoulder, simply by inverting the shoulder pad front to back , it's a clever design. This was probably the main reason why I bought it. Did I mention it oozes quality and pairs very nicely with my Thinktank Retrospective 5, for those shorter shoots. Both bags have a clean and professional look to them, and they don't scream "cameras inside!" It can hold my: Nikon D610, Nikon SB-910 (in it's full square pouch,) Nikon 28mm 1.8G, Nikon 85mm 1.8G, Zeiss ZF.2 50mm 1.4 (on the body,) Nikon SC-29 TTL Cord, Sennheiser MKE 400 Mic, 8 AA Batteries, 4 AAA Batteries, Apple iPad Mini, and one Joby Gorilla Tripod, and more. All stowed away comfortably padded from each other. Very impressive, highly recommend!
