The Speed Convertible series are hybrid shoulder bags/belt packs designed for photographers who value versatile and ergonomic camera bags. First and foremost a contoured shoulder bag, the Speed Convertibles keep photo gear readily accessible. The wide opening flip-top design hinges away from the body to rapidly work in and out of the bag. As a shoulder bag, the Speed Convertibles offer durable zippers, a secondary main compartment entry, and multiple pockets for small accessories. A cushioned shoulder strap with a long section of padding maximizes comfort while carrying the bag in different positions.

To adapt a Speed Convertible bag as a belt pack, deploy the integrated waist belt which is conveniently concealed in two zippered pockets on either side of each Speed Convertible bag. Fastening the flexible belt around the waist provides better stability while walking, especially when used in tandem with the included shoulder strap. The waist belt also features Modular rail sections for attaching Modular, Skin or Multimedia components to increase gear carrying capacity as needed. The three bags in the Speed Convertible series, Speed Demon V2.0, Speed Freak V2.0 and Speed Racer V2.0 offer photographers choice of the right bag size to suit their equipment and the adaptability for a variety of different assignments.

As a way of carrying your camera while having quick and easy access to it, the Speed Demon is the best concept I’ve tried. After trying backpacks, slings, bags, etc., on Ken Rockwell’s recommendation I purchased a Speed Demon V1 a year ago and have never looked back. About a month ago I decided to give the V2 a try. Is it better? The short answer is yes. But it’s not all good news, at least not for me. Probably the most important advantage V2 has over V1 is space for your gear. With only a tiny increment of outer dimensions (not noticeable unless put side by side), V2 is considerably bigger on the inside. I have a D300, a 16-85, a 50, a 12-24, a 55-200, an SB-800 and an SB-900. With the V2 any combination of camera and 3 lenses (one on body) or camera with 2 lenses and a flash will fit comfortably in the bag. Whereas the SB-900 won’t fit in the V1 and some lens combinations are a very tight fit. The space seems to have been gained by eliminating the “unnecessary”. V1 was a padded bag with a separate inner padding that attached with Velcro to the bag. V2 is just has the padding of the bag itself with no separate, removable internal lining. Some pockets within pockets have also been eliminated (it still has more than enough). Other positive changes are the anti-slip on the shoulder strap, the better fit to the body by curving the inside a bit more, slightly more rigid structure (apparently; could be just because it’s new), much sleeker conversion from belt pack to shoulder bag (the belt really disappears into the bag) better weather sealing and more space in pockets. As I pointed out at the beginning, there are some negatives, for me at least. To allow for easier storage of the belt, it is now a lot thinner and made of a softer material. Used ONLY as a belt pack the V1 was a bit more comfortable. I haven’t tried hanging any accessory (like the 70-200 in the zoom pocket) on the new belt but it will probably not hold it in place quite as well as with the previous version. The top zipper doesn’t open and close quite so freely as on V1. The strings on the end of the zippers end in a plastic tab instead of just a knot. I prefer the knot: can’t break and is user replaceable. The Velcro on the inside of the bag does not go right to the top so separators that are placed high up inside the bag are “un-hinged” at the top. And then last but not least is the price. None of the advantages seem to justify a 40% increase in price. That is a huge jump for a bag that if anything looks and feels very slightly cheaper than its previous generation cousin. If I had never owned a V1 it would probably get 5 stars but knowing what I know I can only give it 4.

Fantastic bag. It's well-made and has all the features you could want in a waste pack. The built-in rain cover is a life saver.
