Joao Carlos

Born in New York to Portuguese parents, João Carlos is an Advertising, Fashion and Portrait photographer and director of photography currently based in Lisbon Portugal.
João Carlos is an internationally acclaimed photographer, educator, and creative strategist with over 25 years of experience across fashion, fine art, portraiture, and commercial visual storytelling. A Hasselblad Masters Award recipient, João has earned Photographer of the Year honors from AppImagem (2023), Top 10 placement at the FEP Awards, PX3 Gold, IPA Silver, TIFA Bronze, the prestigious Communication Arts Award of Excellence, and the Medal of Cultural Merit from the city of Caldas da Rainha.
Born in New York to Portuguese parents and based in Lisbon, João’s creative foundation began in painting and the fine arts. That training remains visible in his rich use of color, composition, and emotional depth. His work has been featured in Elle, Forbes, Wallpaper, Kurv, Blink, Numero, Dilema, W25, and exhibited in institutions across the US, Europe, and Asia.
João is a global ambassador for SanDisk, Fujifilm, Canson Infinity, Think Tank Photo, and Koylab, representing industry-leading brands while pushing the limits of visual language. His commercial portfolio includes collaborations with Nike, Vodafone, Universal Music, Pfizer, HP, and Ogilvy, while his personal projects dive deeply into themes of mental health, aging, identity, and emotional resilience.
Notable series like Stages of Isolation, Stages of Depression, A Idade Importa, and Echoes of Silence reflect João’s commitment to creating work that is both visually compelling and socially conscious.
João has proudly represented Team Portugal at the World Photographic Cup for six consecutive years, helping elevate the country's creative presence on the global stage. With the upcoming launch of Light Syndicate Academy, João continues to mentor, teach, and inspire the next generation of photographers worldwide.
